The Sandy Spring Athletic Association Falcons host baseball teams for players from T-Ball up to 18U. Starting in 2012 with one team, the Sandy Spring Falcons program grew to 10 teams, both travel and developmental. It is our primary goal to produce the best possible learning environment where players can have fun, grow and spend time learning the game of baseball from outstanding coaches.
We are still looking for players for our 12u GOLD team and 11u BLUE team. If you are interested, please register for a private tryout at:
The Falcons travel baseball teams typically compete in the local Montgomery County Baseball Association (MCBA) league. Additionally, the teams will select local and travel tournaments for additional challenge and team fun. The travel baseball program runs both fall and spring seasons. The developmental portion of this program for the older players is intended to assist with high school readiness. The players will receive professional assistance from hitting, pitching and overall skills from local high school coaches. The Falcons program is dedicated to helping each baseball player reach their maximum potential with outstanding leadership, both volunteer and professional, and organized league programs. Travel baseball programs are for players age 8-18.
The Falcons baseball teams also compete in local leagues (Rockville Baseball Association – RBBA and Northern Virginia Travel Baseball Association – NVTBA) using a more developmental technique, readying players to move forward and transition between recreational and travel level play. Registration for the league will be posted for the fall season in August. Registration for the spring season will be posted in November and December. More information and registration will be available on this site as it becomes available.
PRACTICES AND FIELDS
Both the travel and developmental programs practice at fields in and surrounding the Sandy Spring area, including the Layhill area, Olney Mill, local school fields and the Norbeck area. Times and dates of practices are determined by the team coaches and families. Additionally, the Falcons rent indoor spaces in and around Montgomery County for drills and clinics during the beginning of the spring season. We are proud to announce that the SSAA Falcons home field for baseball is the brand new North West Regional field on Norbeck Road.
Come on out rising baseball players and join our T-ball program. Registration is now open for the fall season! T-Ball is held for fall and spring seasons. The program is held at Olney Family Neighborhood Park (19117 Willow Grove Road, Olney). T-Ball will run for 60 minutes on Monday and Wednesday nights, and the players will be grouped into multiple teams to make sure they can learn as much as possible.
Each session will begin with organized instruction, drills and practice, and then will end with a scrimmage to put to use the great lessons they’re learning. The players will receive an official Falcons hat and a Falcons shirt with their player number on the back, the cost for T-Ball is $125 and runs 6 weeks. **Also note – there is a wonderful playground and a basketball court at the Olney Family Neighborhood Park, so make plans to stay with your whole family! T-Ball is fun for everyone to watch and assist and see the small baseballers grow. If you’re interested in helping coach please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Registration for fall T-Ball is currently open – register online and get your players ready for great fun and great learning.
(**Note: You will need to set up a “Family Profile” first, and then register your player.)
The Falcons baseball program’s mission of having fun while developing skills is highlighted by our Falcons Winter Clinic. The Sandy Spring Falcons work with 6 area high school coaches from the AP Athletes group on a skills clinic in the winter, helping to build league cohesion, friendships, and an organized forum to learn proper forms and techniques from outstanding coaches.
During these clinics we also hold Coaches Corner; a forum for the coaches to ask each other questions, ask the AP coaches questions, and learn drills and exercises that they can use with their teams going forward. This winter clinic is only for Falcon baseball players, and it is many players first introduction to the rest of their Falcon family. This clinic embodies our mission of fun and development, and we are very proud to offer it to our baseball players. Please check back after the fall season for information, dates and registration for the clinic.
COACHES AND VOLUNTEERS
The Falcons understand that it takes great leadership to form cohesive and fun programs. It is our goal to identify and select coaches based on their ability to connect with the players, their knowledge of baseball, and their willingness to commit to our high standards. All coaches will be background checked, trained for concussion identification and management, trained for youth social awareness (Darkness to Light, or Vertus) and baseball coaching skills using the Ripken method. Once a potential coach receives their certificate of completion from each of these programs they will meet with our baseball commissioner and determine if coaching a team is a good fit. Some teams decide that their best option is to hire a professional coach. This is something the Falcons will support and has supported as long as the team families are in agreement.
